This was the note I was referencing to-
(from the February Crestone, Eagle, Creston, Colorado)
"Dan Evahema, leader of the Hopi traditional elders of Hotevilla on the 3rd Mesa died some timeon the weekend of Januray 23. At last count he was about 107 years old. He was one of the few remaining people who could recall the moment when Hopi leader Yukoma drew a line in the sand and refused to have anything to do with the US Government, taking all those who agreed with him to the third Mesa to build Hotevilla. To this day, Hotevilla follows the traditional ceremonies as instructed by Maasau. In the way of all Hotevilla leaders before him Evahema never recognized the Hopi Tribal Council and criticized their inducements to compromise the Hopi way, Techua Ikachi, Land and Life. Even at his great age, Evahema planted corn according to the Hopi way. Few will do it after him." |
